Dear Science Impact Coordinators
Following on from my earlier email, please find below further information about upcoming training for colleagues interested in The Conversation. Please could you circulate to colleagues who may be interested.
Many thanks
Jo
The University of Strathclyde has recently become a member of The Conversation<https://theconversation.com/uk>, an open access, independent news source, informed by academics and delivered directly to the public. The Conversation has a worldwide reach of around 34m readers, with 8.5m in the UK. Its content covers a wide range of disciplines and it is therefore an ideal platform for academics around the University to share their work with the public. Other media outlets frequently pick up stories from The Conversation, thus accelerating our potential for impact further. The tool furthermore supplies information on the amount of attention and location of interest a posting receives, thus providing you with clear metrics about the reach of your publications. Please see attached PowerPoint for further information on The Conversation.
As part of our initial introduction to The Conversation, we are organising a number of training sessions focused on how to engage with The Conversation, hosted by Steve Vass, The Conversation Scotland Editor.
Steve joined The Conversation in February 2014 after nearly 10 years at the Sunday Herald, first as media correspondent and then as deputy business editor. Steve will provide guidance on the following areas:
* An introduction to The Conversation
* How to pitch to the Conversation
* What does a pitch look like?
* Thinking about your research and the media
* How to write for the media
The first training session will take place on Tuesday 27th of November, from 12.30pm to 15:00pm in (location TBC). Please register for the event here<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-conversation-media-training-tickets-52361670165>.
Our current arrangement with The Conversation runs for a 1-year trial phase, after which we will evaluate the benefits of our membership. We would therefore like to encourage as many staff as possible to engage with this tool in order to gain a clear understanding how our membership can help us enhance the impact of our research.

Dear Science Impact Coordinators,
>From 1 November, the university will become a member of The Conversation (TC), which is an open access, independent source of news and views from academics delivered directly to the public. TC has a worldwide reach of around 34m readers, with 8.5 m in the UK alone. Content published in TC is frequently republished in the media and covers all disciplines. It is therefore an ideal platform to engage with the public about your impact case studies, and I would like to encourage as many authors as possible to submit articles about their research to TC. As part of the launch we will be running a number of training workshops, which will provide a general overview on how to engage with TC, as well as individual sessions with potential authors on developing your article. Notification of the dates for the training sessions will be confirmed shortly, and once confirmed, further details will be sent to you as impact coordinators. Please note that TC editors will always work with authors to shape their submissions, so workshop attendance is not a prerequisite to submit a feature.
The current arrangement runs for a 1 year trial phase after which we will evaluate the benefits of our membership of TC as such, it would be grateful if impact coordinators could provide feedback as to which case study authors have submitted articles, as well as any positive or negative feedback arising from submission.
If you have any queries regarding TC please contact Tanya Kay
Best wishes
Jo
