Talking about international students at home and away

Dear Colleague,

QAA Scotland is offering a free 'in conversation' event on the topic of the international student experience considering those students who study on international campuses as well as those who study in the UK. This half-day event is part of QAA Scotland's work on the current Enhancement Theme - Evidence for Enhancement: Improving the Student Experience<https://www.enhancementthemes.ac.uk/current-enhancement-theme>, and provides delegates the opportunity to engage in discussion in small groups with two inspiring colleagues:

  * Professor Stephen Doughty is President and CEO of the Malaysia Campus of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and University College Dublin. Stephen will consider the comparisons that can be made between home and branch campus student views and experiences. Prior to his current role, he led the University of Nottingham's Malaysia campus.

  * Professor Divya Jindal-Snape is Chair of Education, Inclusion and Life Transitions at the University of Dundee. Divya has engaged extensively with QAA Scotland notably on the Student Transitions Enhancement Theme. She undertakes research - and has a keen eye for its practical application - supporting international students to make a positive transition into study in the UK and, as graduates, onto their future careers.

Topics for discussion will be guided by delegates and are likely to include:

- Views of UK HE from overseas campuses
- Methods for gathering and responding to the international student voice
- Supporting students and staff to deliver a high-quality experience
- Delivering an international experience for all students

The event will interest a wide range of staff and student representatives, particularly those with responsibility for managing the international student experience and responding to student views. We anticipate the focus being on institutional policy development and implementation.

The event will draw on outcomes of previous QAA Scotland activity in this area including: the Student Transitions Enhancement Theme<https://www.enhancementthemes.ac.uk/completed-enhancement-themes/student-transitions>; the Focus On Collaborative Activity<https://www.qaa.ac.uk/scotland/focus-on/collaborative-activity> Project; and, the student-led work on the principles of responding to the student voice<https://www.enhancementthemes.ac.uk/current-enhancement-theme/student-engagement-and-demographics/responding-to-student-voice> work which is part of the current Evidence for Enhancement Theme<https://www.enhancementthemes.ac.uk/current-enhancement-theme>.

Please note: we are aware that this event coincides with the University of Edinburgh's Using Qualitative Data for Driving Decision-Making at Scale Enhancement Themes event. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable due to speaker availability.

What should I do next?

Please do pass this email on to colleagues or contacts who you think would be interested in participating.

To register interest please contact QAA Scotland on ARCadmin at qaa.ac.uk<mailto:ARCadmin at qaa.ac.uk>. To help us manage the numbers overall, we would appreciate if you can respond by 28 February 2019

If you have any questions about the event, please do contact me or my colleague William Hasty (w.hasty at qaa.ac.uk<mailto:w.hasty at qaa.ac.uk>)

I look forward to welcoming you to this stimulating session.

Best wishes
Ailsa
