Hello,

A full refresh of the operating system and software on centrally managed IT labs will happen this summer. If you use the labs for teaching, you need to request your software to be installed:

All other software products - even if site-licensed - must be explicitly requested each academic year. To do so, you should email lab-software at strath.ac.uk<mailto:lab-software at strath.ac.uk> no later than 30th April 2019 with the requirements, including details on where to obtain the media and license keys.

Thanks,

Timothy

Subject: Software on centrally managed computer labs and Library PCs

(Summary: if you use any of the centrally managed computer labs for your teaching, you MUST read this and respond appropriately to ensure that the software that you require for your teaching is available next year. This message is being distributed to the "IT Spotlight" community, and to all who have previously requested "lab software" )

Information Services provides around 1500 student-facing PCs, which are used both for teaching and private study. These are located throughout the University Library, and in around 20 bookable rooms of varying sizes across the campus.

In Summer 2019 the software manifest on all student computers in the University Library and the centrally managed labs will change.

There are two main drivers for this - Microsoft are dropping support for Windows 7 halfway through the next academic year and the Scottish Government have mandated that we must achieve CyberEssentials+ compliance. This has some major consequences-

1. Windows 10 will replace Windows 7 on all centrally managed student desktops
2. We have to be able to justify the entire software manifest in the student labs to auditors

This is an opportunity to rationalise the software builds on these computers, removing obsolete products and ensuring that consistent versions are used across the campus. Therefore, it is essential that we get an up-to-date list of all software used for teaching in these centrally supported student facilities.

The standard build will include the following core software:

Core software:
Microsoft Office 2019
Adobe Reader
Google Chrome
7-Zip

All other software products - even if site-licensed - must be explicitly requested each academic year. To do so, you should email lab-software at strath.ac.uk<mailto:lab-software at strath.ac.uk> no later than 30th April 2019 with the requirements, including details on where to obtain the media and license keys.

All software requested will have the default installation unless requested otherwise.

It is anticipated that a pre-production system will be available within the University Library in May 2019 to allow academic and support staff to verify that the software image meets their teaching requirements.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the team via the above email address.

Kind regards,
Bruce.
