Subject: FW: Talk in R215, Thurs 19th Sept 11am
Dear Catherine
Please see the email below from Professor John Soraghan in the EEE Department. I have circulated the email within EEE. Professor Soraghan has asked if the email can also be circulated to academic staff in Physics. Would this be possible?
Many thanks,
Morag

Dear All,
You are invited to a talk to be given by Professor Gene Frantz.
Title: Has the Signal to Return to Analog happened?
Time: 11am-12noon, Thurs 19th Sept 2019
Location: R215, Royal College Building
Abstract: I was part of the community who convinced the industry that DSP was here and analog was out. After decades of success using digital signal processing theory and devices to create new capabilities, it seems to be time to begin a move back to analog. This talk will cover the reasons this movement is happening from a market viewpoint and a technical viewpoint. After these two topics are covered, time will be spent talking about how analog signal processing and digital signal processing will not only co-exist but be complimentary to each other in creating the next set of capabilities.
Bio: Gene A Frantz is a founder of Octavo Systems, a company innovating in system integration using System in Package technology. He is also a Professor in the Practice at Rice University, USA in its Electrical and Computer Engineering Department where he has been since retiring from Texas Instruments where he was TI's Principal Fellow. He spent his TI career applying his passion for finding new opportunities and creating new businesses utilizing digital signal processing (DSP) technology and took a leadership role in starting businesses within the corporate structure. As a result, he was a recognized leader in DSP technology both within TI and throughout the industry. He has brought this passion to Octavo Systems and Rice University in his respective leadership roles.
Frantz is a Fellow of the IEEE. He holds 50 patents in the area of memories, speech, consumer products, DSP and system integration. He has written more than 100 Papers and articles and continually presents at Universities and conferences worldwide. Frantz has been recognized as an industry expert and has been widely quoted in the media due to his tremendous knowledge and vision in the world of technology.
