[Academic] Reminder - meetings with students

A message for all academic staff involved in teaching or advising students:

Now that the semester has started and students are settling into their classes, please can I remind staff of an important issue:

If you have a meeting with a student who is reporting a problem or asking for help, you are advised to follow up the meeting with an email to the student briefly outlining what has been discussed and what has been advised.

This really helps to ensure that
(a) the student is clear on what you have advised, particularly if there are several options;
(b) the student has information to refer back to - when they are distressed they often don't take it all in;
(c) you have a note in writing of support suggested in case of a subsequent complaint about lack of support incorrect advice.

If you are in doubt about how to advise a student, Nigel, Alison, Brian and I can all help you.

Although the students have been told about the various support/welfare services, they often don't remember the information and need to be told again when they meet with you.  It helps to include the relevant links in the email.
