Subject: Nuffield - project call

Dear all

I hope you and your families are all safe and well. Please see the official update about the "Nuffield Future Researchers" attached, this is the new name of the Nuffield Research Placements for this year to reflect the unusual circumstances. Please let me know if you cannot open the document! It is wonderful to still be able to give the applying students something beneficial to participate in, especially in light of their exams being cancelled at such a crucial stage in their education (S5 pupils - Higher Exams), and there is a keen interest from them to participate.

*It would be wonderful if you would consider providing a remote/online project, and please do get in touch if you can. The decision was taken to move to doing remote/online projects only this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic - a very wise decision in the current circumstances.

There is a short survey being sent out to supervisors/providers with projects on the system asking about software, journals etc. that students (as mentioned 16/17 year old school pupils just going into S6) may need access to in order to undertake the project, so that the Foundation can help to get things in place. The survey is due in by 8th May - which is why I am emailing (although I can accept projects after this date - so still get in touch). I have 62 students on the system and this year the physical geography of where the students are and where you are is not an issue, being that all projects will run remotely, this means you should get a really strong student match. Furthermore any projects on the system that there is not a suitable student for in Scotland, will be made available to other students around the UK, which is quite exciting.

You will see on the update that there will be a series of modules running as part of the scheme. We were developing these anyway and they were due to be piloted this year, and I was intending on Scotland being one of four UK regions to test them (due to the benefit) - however the Foundation have worked very hard to adapt these and get them ready for all students for this year, which is great. The research project is the key component of these modules as you will see on the document attached - highlighted in red on the timeline table.

In addition to all the information on the document we are looking into options for the Virtual Learning Environment for working within, we should know soon which one we will be using - this should make the process smooth and secure.

We are preparing safeguarding documents for supervisors and students to sign (possibly parents/guardians too). I am hoping that this will also incorporate a pre-filled standard risk assessment section for home working (for the students).

Placing students will begin soon (sending out applications for consideration), and there will be inductions online with myself early in June (one for supervisors and one for students). After this the students can begin contact with their supervisors (those listed as 1st supervisor on the system).

Do get in touch if you can help and provide a project or if you are unsure about any of the above.

Best wishes, keep safe and well

Jennifer
