*Subject:* Rank Prize Funds COVID-19 Response Fund – hardship grants for
final year PhD students in optoelectronics

Dear Principal,

The Trustees of the Rank Prize Funds have decided to offer a number of
awards, each worth £5,000, for final year PhD students in UK
universities which have a major commitment to teaching and research in
optoelectronics, including vision and the eye.  The scheme is intended
to support students whose studies have been disrupted by the
restrictions imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and who would
not otherwise have the financial resources to be able to complete their
studies in a timely manner. They should not be in receipt of similar
funding from another source.

Each university is invited to nominate up to two (maximum) final year
optoelectronics (including vision and the eye) PhD students to receive
an award. No more than two applications may be submitted per university
and the expectation is that it is highly unlikely that more than one
will be funded. The two applicants should be from different departments
or schools of the University and if two applications are submitted they
will need to be rank-ordered by the University.  A copy of this email
has been sent to the following departments in your University:

Physics

Electrical Engineering

The closing date for applications is Friday 31^st July 2020. The
application form can be downloaded from our website www.rankprize.org
