Dear All,

I attach the PH450 Project Allocation that will be sent to students today (Wed 23/9/2020). There are a few students yet to be allocated a project, hence this list is not complete. The remaining students in the 2nd round should be allocated a project and supervisor over the next couple of days. I also attach the slides given to students with key dates (including assessment deadlines) and advice.

Notes:

  * I will request that students contact supervisors by the end of this week to arrange the first supervision
  * You should try to have regular meetings (at least once a week, more often at the beginning) to monitor their progress
  * If there are signs that your student is failing to engage, please inform me (or Sebastian or Ben) as soon as it becomes a concern
  * Semester 1 and the first report should concentrate on the student building a solid understanding of the background to the project, including the literature and relevant work, theory, methods, and the steps to be taken in Semester 2
  * Most projects do not have any special safety requirements, though students have been asked to take the DSE Safety course. If your project may involve experiment/lab/field work etc., then an S17P safety form should be filled out by the student and returned via MyPlace as well as the requisite safety assessment, training, and procedures if indicated by your own risk assessment.
  * I am still developing new guidance information (reports, talk, viva, etc.) and these will appear on MyPlace as soon as they are complete. The structure of the reports will be modified from previous years, the talks will be pre-recorded Powerpoints, and the vivas may need to be done remotely.

Key Dates:
26/10/2020 Safety Forms (if required)
11/01/2021 First Report Due (20%)
22/02/2021 Presentation Due (10%)
15/03/2021 Sample Pages for Feedback from Student Due
05/04/2021 Second Report Due (30%)
19/04/2021 - 21/05/2021 Exam Period, Vivas (20%) + Supervisor Mark (20%)

Thank you to all who have offered extra projects and to take on more students than usual this year. The combination of a high number of 4th years together with the pandemic has made things much more difficult than in previous years. I have tried to spread the load as fairly as I could, considering individual circumstances as I have been made aware. Students I have talked to have expressed enthusiasm for the projects so this is encouraging.

Regards,
Daniel, PH450 Project Coordinator
