Dear All,

The following information has been sent to students about the First Report for PH450. This year, the report has been split into a First (20%) and Second Report (30%). The First Report is essentially the combined Literature Review and Progress Report in previous years. Detailed guidance is in draft at the moment.

Daniel

Subject: PH450: First Report, Preliminary Information

The guidance for the First Report is currently being drafted and should be available in the next week or so. The purpose of the First Report is for the student to demonstrate that they have sufficient background knowledge, skills, and understanding of the project before they move onto further work. In the meantime, the following information may be of use:

  * Recommended length 12 pages (main parts, not including front matter, references, appendices)
  * Due Noon Monday 11th January 2021, PDF format via MyPlace
  * Includes Motivation, Literature Review, Background Physics (Theory/Exp/Techniques), Some Analysis of Existing Work (could be rederivation, comparison or approaches, worked examples etc.) to show that the student can apply the background knowledge
  * No new work expected (this should be saved for the Second Report)

More detailed information will be provided in the guidance notes. A template will also be supplied to ensure consistent formatting across reports. Templates will be supplied for both LaTeX and Word.
