To PH450 Supervisors,

Due to the original hand-in date falling on Easter Monday, the hand-in date for the 2nd Report has been extended by 1 week to the 12th April 2021. However, students are expected to use the extra week to work on their report without extra input from Supervisors, as this is during the Spring Vacation when most (if not all) staff will require rest and recuperation and take leave. To ensure consistency, all supervisors are advised to provide supervision up to, and including the 1st April 2021 (Thursday before Good Friday) but not contribute input to the report thereafter.

As a consequence of the 1 week extension, the date of draft material submission has also been extended to the 22nd March 2021. Please return comments and feedback on draft material by the 1st April, preferably sooner, in order to allow students to incorporate required changes in good time.

For reference, the following message has been posted on MyPlace and sent to students:

Following consultation at the Staff-Student Committee, the hand-in date for the 2nd Report has been extended to the Noon Monday 12th April 2021. This is to avoid the Easter Monday and the Easter Weekend and to allow students more time to incorporate comments and feedback from supervisors. Due to the additional week for the final submission, the date for the draft material has also been extended to the 22nd March 2021 with feedback returned by the 1st April. Please do allow sufficient time for your supervisor to read and compose feedback on material sent to them, at least a day or two.

As this extension period extends into the Spring Vacation period, it is important to take into account the need for rest and recuperation of both staff and students. Supervisors are to provide input until the 1st April 2021 after which it is unreasonable to expect them to engage in additional supervision, especially at a time when they may require much needed recovery time from a challenging semester, and to take leave, especially those with children. To ensure consistency and fairness across projects, supervisors are advised not provide additional input into the report after the 1st April 2021. This is consistent with the departmental policy, "In order to promote consistency across the department the supervisor(s) should not be involved in an iterative process of correction of, or input to, the report material".

We re-iterate advice that students engage with Supervisors continuously throughout the project and obtain feedback on their work. Supervisors have been advised to provide informal feedback on the assessments as to improvements as well as a general indication of performance.

Dr Daniel Oi (PH450 Coordinator) & Teaching Directors

Thanks,
Daniel

PS I am looking for example Phys Rev A papers of around 6000 words so please forward me any of your papers if you think they may be suitable to indicate the format, structure, and general style that the 2nd Report should follow. In particular, it would be good to show examples of papers that are more generally accessible to non-experts.
