Dear All,

Please find information below and attached on the latest Springboard call for circulation within your respective departments. Springboard offers a bespoke package of support to biomedical researchers at the in their first independent post to help launch their research careers. These awards provide up to £100,000 over two years and a personalised package of career support to help newly independent biomedical scientists to launch their research careers.

The Academy of Medical Sciences embraces the broad diversity of biomedical research and its non-clinical Fellows represent the breadth of the field. They encourage Springboard applicants from molecular, cellular and structural biology to anatomical, physiological, psychological, epidemiological and public health research areas. Researchers may use experimental or theoretical approaches and be undertaking basic laboratory research through clinical application to healthcare delivery but the work must reflect the Academy's mission to improve health through research.

The Springboard scheme is aimed at early-career researchers in their first independent post and within five years of appointment on 15th June 2021. For round 7, the latest eligible appointment start date is 16th November 2021. In order to be eligible the researchers must not be in receipt of funding exceeding more than £75,000/year (excluding salary, including PhD studentships) and must have sufficient time left in their position to complete the project.

Since Springboard began, 105 awards have been made from a total of 396 applications, representing an overall success rate of 27%. Ten institutions have secured 58 of these awards, achieving an overall success rate of 50% or more. One of Springboard's unusual features is its support for unsuccessful applicants, all of whom receive feedback and are eligible for the Academy's esteemed mentoring programme.

Prof. Robin Plevin is the Institutional Champion for the scheme and is assisted in this regard by Prof. Billy Harnett and myself. Please could you all consider investigating eligible applicants within your respective departments? We will decide on an assessment process depending on the response generated. We can only nominate 4 people to apply. Awards will be made depending on the excellence of applicant, the applicants need of the award and the impact it would have on their career, quality of research proposal, and also research environment and support. A high emphasis has been placed on the clarity of planned further funding.

Both successful and unsuccessful applicants will be able to access a package of career development opportunities through the scheme, including mentoring by Academy fellows, training and networking opportunities.

The timelines for the round will be as follows:

· 5th April 2021 deadline for interested academics to submit their CV and one page project outline to debbie.stack at strath.ac.uk<mailto:debbie.stack at strath.ac.uk> and w.harnett at strath.ac.uk<mailto:w.harnett at strath.ac.uk>

· 3rd May 2021 deadline for us to inform AMS of our selection so that they invite our 4 selected applicants through Flexi-Grant

· 15th June 2021 deadline for selected applicants to submit their full application via the portal

I have attached the FAQs, guidance, and a sample application form, although applications are done online when invited.

We would be grateful for notification of your eligible researchers as soon as possible.

Please let me know if you require any further information.

Kind regards,

Debbie
