Subject: 2021 IoP Computational Physics PhD Thesis Prize --- upcoming deadline
Dear Colleagues,
I apologize if this has been cross-posted to you in anyway.
The deadline for the 2021 IoP Computational Physics PhD Thesis Prize is at the end of the month (30 April).
I’d be most grateful if you would forward the reminder below regarding the 2021 PhD Thesis Prize to your departmental postgraduate and academic staff mailing lists and any other colleagues who may be interested. Covid has made the last year difficult for many of our graduate students and appropriate candidates may require additional encouragement to apply.
Many thanks in advance,
Tyler Shendruk
To: PhD supervisors, PhD students and External Examiners of PhDs in Computational Physics.
The Committee of the Institute of Physics Computational Group offers an annual thesis prize for the author of the PhD thesis that, in the opinion of the Committee, contributes most strongly to the advancement of computational physics. Runner-up prizes may also be awarded. Prize winners will be invited to write a feature article in the Computational Physics Group newsletter. With covid impacting some many of our graduate students, this is a particularly excellent year to encourage our students to apply .
Entry is open to all students from an institution in the UK or Ireland, whose PhD examination has taken place since 1st January 2020 and up to the deadline for submissions.
***Deadline 30th April 2021 approaching ***
Submission format
* A four page (A4) summary from the student of the key research findings contained in the thesis
* A one page (A4) citation from the PhD supervisor, including confirmation of the date of PhD examination, that the student passed and whether the thesis has also been submitted to another IOP group for a similar PhD thesis prize
* A one page (A4) confidential report from the external examiner of the PhD thesis
Candidates are asked to note that if a similar thesis prize is offered by another IOP group (such as the Theory of Condensed Matter group), the Committee intends to liaise with that group so that both prizes will not be awarded to the same applicant.
Entries (PDF documents preferred) and any queries should be submitted by email, with "IOP CPG Thesis Prize" as the subject header, to Tyler Shendruk (t.shendruk at ed.ac.uk<mailto:t.shendruk at ed.ac.uk>). A few more details and a list of previous awardees can be found at https://www.iop.org/physics-community/special-interest-groups/computational-physics-group/phd-thesis-prize#gref<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.iop.org%2Fphysics-community%2Fspecial-interest-groups%2Fcomputational-physics-group%2Fphd-thesis-prize%23gref&data=04%7C01%7Cphysics-hod%40strath.ac.uk%7C132063041e384396058308d8fe6b9ca6%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637539086160133317%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=VWIQTlHLt3S3hhqushgeF97urbDI5SOoXj7HvyJza%2BA%3D&reserved=0>
