Message sent on behalf of Gail McConnell:
Dear all,
Please see below from STFC. The 2021/22 STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship scheme is running again this year, and the Department can put forward one candidate.
If you are interested in applying for one of these prestigious fellowships, or if you are supporting an external candidate in their application to be based in the Department, we request that interested candidates send me (g.mcconnell at strath.ac.uk<mailto:g.mcconnell at strath.ac.uk>) a candidate CV using the attached template and a one page outline of their research plan no later than 5pm on Monday 12th July for internal triage. We will operate a selection process based on the submitted documentation. We aim to complete this process by late July to give the successful candidate sufficient time to prepare and submit a full application to STFC by the deadline on 16th September 2021.
Thanks and regards,
Gail

Subject: STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship application limit 2021/22
CAUTION: This email originated outside the University. Check before clicking links or attachments.
Dear Head of Department
STFC ERNEST RUTHERFORD FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS 2021/22
Ernest Rutherford Fellowship Application Limits
STFC sets a limit on the number of Fellowship applications that each department is permitted to submit and these limits are agreed annually by the Education, Training and Careers Committee. For the current round the Committee has recommended that the overall maximum number of applications should remain at the current level to ensure that only genuinely competitive candidates are put forward and that the peer review process can focus on careful assessment of those candidates. The Committee also recommended that no appeals should be allowed.
Your Department's Limit
University of Strathclyde
Department of Physics
The maximum number of Ernest Rutherford Fellowship applications that may be submitted by your department is 1
This limit is derived from the number of applicants on consolidated and consortium grants within the department as input in 2020 to the STFC research studentship algorithm. In keeping with the recommendation of the Education, Training and Careers Committee, no appeals for applications above the limit calculated by this method will be allowed. To avoid disadvantaging candidates who might otherwise have applied through another department, you should remain within these limits. You may also wish to consider the timing of internal selection processes in case of excellent late-emerging candidates. You should take into account Equal Opportunities requirements as part of your process. The ERF scheme is set up to fairly assess applications from all applicants regardless of their background. You have a critical role in ensuring that all potential applicants have a fair chance of being put forward for the scheme and are encouraged and supported through a transparent selection process based on ability and potential
Application limits for Ernest Rutherford Fellowships can be found through the UKRI funding finder<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ukri.org%2Fopportunity%2F&data=04%7C01%7Ccath.cheshire%40strath.ac.uk%7C4ed768be11634ee8a03208d937dcb884%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637602243653060097%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=XeLS7dF1QfYrERWDiurg5Os7T9D8pflUSJeUDqP5fYw%3D&reserved=0> webpage under the Ernest Rutherford Fellowship opportunity; this will help applicants to identify possible host institutions. The UKRI Webteam are in the process of adding this opportunity to the webpage and it should be available by 1 July. We will also be informing candidates that they should not be put under any pressure to accept an offer to be hosted before the 19th August. Departments are requested to abide by this date.
You are requested to supply a name and email address of a single point of contact for potential applicants by 2 July 2021. If the department has an internal deadline for applicants to contact the department by, this should also be notified to STFC. This information will be added to the STFC website. This is a mandatory requirement.
Any departments who exceed their limit will be required to withdraw the excess application(s). Departments will be notified by STFC if they exceed their limit and will need to select the application(s) to withdraw within one week of this notification. If no selection is made by the department, the excess application(s) will be selected by STFC based on the chronological order in which they were received.
Career Breaks and impact of Covid
STFC encourages returners to research from career breaks and applicants from diverse backgrounds. In assessing the effects of career breaks, the Panel will note the applicant's career trajectory and potential at the beginning of the break, relative to the stage of the applicant's career. In assessing proposals, the Panel will recognise that the effects on productivity of a career break, may continue beyond the return to work.
UKRI recognises that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused major interruptions and disruptions across our communities and are committed to ensuring that individual applicants and their wider team, including partners and networks, are not penalised for any disruption to their career(s) such as breaks and delays, disruptive working patterns and conditions, the loss of on-going work, and role changes that may have been caused by the pandemic.
Reviewers and panel members will be advised to consider the unequal impacts of the impact that COVID-19 related disruption might have had on the track record and career development of those individuals included in the proposal and will be asked to consider the capability of the applicant and their wider team to deliver the research they are proposing. Where disruptions have occurred applicants can highlight this within their application, if they wish, but there is no requirement to detail the specific circumstances that caused the disruption.
Global Talent Visas
All successful Ernest Rutherford Fellowship applicants who require a visa to work in the UK will be eligible to be considered under the Global Talent visa<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ukri.org%2Fresearch%2Finternational%2Fglobal-talent-visa%2F&data=04%7C01%7Ccath.cheshire%40strath.ac.uk%7C4ed768be11634ee8a03208d937dcb884%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637602243653070089%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=GJ9W2TrUgsc9%2BivS%2BvgfaEC%2BgMpy1fzjDVbiDldlWEA%3D&reserved=0> route. UKRI is able to provide additional guidance regarding the appropriate evidence required to complete the visa application process under the Exceptional Talent visa.
Please refer to the Home Office Guidance <https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-on-applications-under-global-talent> for further details.
Call for Proposals
The closing date for the 2021/22 fellowships round will be Thursday 16 September 2021 and the guidance and application form will be available in the next week via the Je-S system.
The ERF guidance for applicants 2021 for completing proposals will no longer be available on the Fellowship webpage. All information and documentation regarding the ERF 2021 opportunity has now been transferred to the UKRI Funding Finder webpage<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ukri.org%2Fopportunity%2F&data=04%7C01%7Ccath.cheshire%40strath.ac.uk%7C4ed768be11634ee8a03208d937dcb884%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637602243653080086%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=9PTt4fgKQyWFgmmpEsPE7KqNA1UrT6wuxP7uoZ5DvqE%3D&reserved=0>. This is in the process of being updated by the UKRI Webteam and should be available by 1 July. Please note, there have been significant changes to the documents and the guidance for applicants. Please make applicants aware of these significant changes. They must read the guidance for applicants 2021 and complete the narrative cv template for this year's opportunity. Both are attached for their information. Please ask applicants to read the guidance for applicants before submitting their application through Je-S to ensure they are submitting the correct documents.
If you have any queries about application limits or the Ernest Rutherford Fellowship scheme more generally, please contact fellowships at stfc.ukri.org<mailto:fellowships at stfc.ukri.org>
Yours sincerely
