Subject: PH450: 2021-22 Call for Projects Due 13/8/2021

Dear All,

This is the official call for projects for PH450 for 2021-22. In the first instance, I will carry over the list of projects from last year (see attached spreadsheet):

  * Please inform me of any changes/additions by Friday 13th August 2021 using the template the attached spreadsheet
  * Note that the spreadsheet is protected so fill in the template unprotected boxes when submitting changes and amendments
  * At this stage, please offer at least the same number of projects (per group/PI) if possible. As usual, I will perform load balancing across staff and may be in contact to request additional projects from underrepresented groups/PIs. I will take into account previous years as well as other teaching commitments and circumstances

Thanks,
Daniel, PH450 Coordinator

Subject: [Academic] PH450: 2021-22 Projects Preliminary Information

Dear All,

Here are some preliminary information about next year's PH450 Project arrangements:

  * COVID situation still uncertain, projects will need a fall-back position in case that supervision and project work is still to be conducted remotely
  * It would be good if people could reassess the projects they offered in 2020-21 and whether they could be run in much the same format in case there are continuing restrictions on in-person activities/lab access/etc.
  * I shall be making a formal call for project topics from supervisors next week. Hopefully, the number of projects required will be a little bit less than it was for this previous year. As before, there will be load balancing performed to spread out students.
  * As before, Students can arrange projects with Supervisors on an ad hoc basis (e.g. a summer student wanting to keep working with a supervisor or group), but there must be a clear distinction between any previous work done by the student and the PH450 project, this is in the interests of fairness to other students starting projects from scratch. If you and a student agree on a project prior to the standard allocation process (Sem 1 Wks 0,1), please discuss this with me.

Schedule:

  * July 2021 Request for Projects from Supervisors, due 9th August
  * End-Aug 2021 Draft Booklet released to Students
  * Sem 1 Wk 0 Students contact potential supervisors and submit preferences
  *   Sem 1 Wk 1 Project allocation
  *   Sem 1 Wk 4 Literature Review Due (non-assessed)
  * Sem 1 Wk 5 Safety Induction Record Due
  * Sem 2 Wk 0 Progress Report Due
  * Sem 2 Wk 4 Talk due, pre-recorded Powerpoint + voiceover, marked by Examination Committee
  *   Sem 2 Wk 8 Draft 10 pages due (non-assessed)
  * Sem 2 Wk 11/12 Final Project Report Due (Monday of Spring Vacation)
  * Sem 2 Exam Period, Vivas

Assessment:

  1.  Talk (10 mins) 10%
  2.  Final Report (~30 pages) 50%
  3.  Viva (30 mins) 20%
  4.  Supervisor Mark 20%
Examination Committee, markers of Talk, Final Report, Viva: Supervisor, Independent, Chair
