Dear colleagues,
we all rejoice in the award of the 2021 Nobel prize in Physics to Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi
for their studies of complex systems in physics. In particular we welcome the award to Giorgio Parisi, colleague and friend,
for his contributions to the understanding of spin glasses, disordered media, replica symmetry breaking and, more generally,
properties and evolution of complex physical systems.
A special thanks to Willie Firth who brought these themes to our Department in the early 1980s with his work in nonlinear and
quantum optics, solitons and pattern formation.
Cheers,
gian-luca
