Dear all,

short version of email: – I am looking for academic support to set up a short (4 hour) module for young people with learning difficulties. The project is in collaboration with Enable Scotland and the Science Faculty. The course will count towards workload. If you are interested then a prompt response would be very helpful.

Full version:
You may be aware of the Breaking Barriers programme, developed in the Business School with Enable Scotland, for young people with learning disabilities – https://www.enable.org.uk/aboutus/how-we-are-run/enable-works/breaking-barriers/

. This is a short programme which runs over the summer where the learners spend a few hours per week over a 6 week period on campus engaged with contributions from each department. This is then followed by a short placement in industry which is arranged with support from Enable Scotland. Enable Scotland have been in discussion with the Science Faculty about expanding the programme beyond Business and an agreement has been reached that Science will be the next Faculty to deliver our version of Breaking Barriers.

Breaking Barriers - Science will run over a total of eight weeks between September – December 2022 with each department delivering two separate 2-hour sessions. The common theme across all the departments will be the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – https://sdgs.un.org/goals. There are 17 SDGs and there are clear overlaps with all the research within the department. The course will be pitched at SQ Level 6, the level of Highers, and there will be approximately eight participants. Each participant will have a student mentor to help the adjustment to university life with these mentors recruited from the “... With Teaching” degrees from each department (Physics w/t Teaching in our case). The course will have lecture and lab aspects.

At this stage I need some input on developing a syllabus for the Physics component. We will be delivering a total of four hours of material to eight students, so I am not looking for anything especially detailed. This is an excellent opportunity to meaningfully develop our activities for Widening Participation.

Best,
Griff

PS, I wasn’t aware of the Sustainable Development Goals. These were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, to "provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future"

GOAL 1: No Poverty
GOAL 2: Zero Hunger
GOAL 3: Good Health and Well-being
GOAL 4: Quality Education
GOAL 5: Gender Equality
GOAL 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
GOAL 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
GOAL 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
GOAL 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
GOAL 10: Reduced Inequality
GOAL 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
GOAL 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
GOAL 13: Climate Action
GOAL 14: Life Below Water
GOAL 15: Life on Land
GOAL 16: Peace and Justice Strong Institutions
GOAL 17: Partnerships to achieve the Goal
