Dear All,

I am looking for propositions for the MSc projects this year, please.
This year interest seems to be quite distributed covering all groups of
the department but there is still a dominant need for experimental
projects in the solid-state/nanoscience/optics/laser areas.

Please supply the project descriptions on the attached template to
Melanie, melanie.mcinanny at strath.ac.uk, till *17/01/2022*

You can agree with a student on a bespoke project till then and even
later, but any project which is in the project booklet must then be
distributed centrally.

I am aware of two matches made already (Adrian: Celin, Kali: Casey)

Tentative timeline is

  * 25/02/2022 students indicate project choices
  * 14/03/2022 project allocated
  * 26/05/2022 start of project with initial based on the project
description and a closer definition of scope either per email or a
    short meeting.
  * 06/06/2022 (TBC): Start of supervised detailed activities after
    progress decision of exam board
  * 06/06/2022: Support session of project coordinator on project
expectations, literature search and referencing and fitting
  * end of July/early August: Project progress workshop (only students
    and project coordinator)
  * 15/08/2022, 12.00 noon: Hand-in deadline for report
  * 22-31/08/2022 (or slightly before/after depending on availability of
examiners and delays in project): Assessment by talk and vivas

Overall, the arrangement to start with a literature review already end
of May gives the students a few more days on the project and more
flexibility end of August to deal with extensions.

This year we have actually a few keen guys who asked whether they could
start with the project early or do other research work in semester 2. I
posted the following response to students: "I have gotten requests
whether it is possible to start with the project earlier than May 26.
This is welcome laudable engagement on the one hand, but creates issues
with treating all students fairly and on equal terms on the other hand.

Of course, nobody can stop you from doing an informal unsupervised
literature survey in the project area before May 26. If an academic
agrees, you can do an informal placement in their lab over sem 2, but
you need to keep in mind that you need to balance that with your
obligations in the taught modules which should be your main focus
according to the study plan. If you fail an exam or do not get the mark
you wanted to, these voluntary extra-curricular activities do not count
as mitigating personal circumstances. There is no obligation for
academics to take you on and you can use it only to gain general skills
in the area. Results obtained in an informal placement MUST NOT form
part of the project report to be fair to all students."

Thank you very much for providing project opportunities.

Regards

Thorsten
