The BBQ research group is a dynamic team of researchers working at the interface of quantum information theory and experiment, with a specific focus on exploring high-dimensional quantum photonic systems and applying them for enhancing modern quantum technologies.
The BBQ Lab<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbbqlab.org%2Fgallery%2F&data=05%7C01%7Calison.yao%40strath.ac.uk%7Ca72882cde80340955c3208da5e0a6325%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637925696844886566%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=dLMr3mSPgZwDfd6EwWGHroMrv%2F6S8%2FJuxQKGl3Q5Iwk%3D&reserved=0> is situated in custom-built, state-of-the-art photonics laboratories outfitted with a wide range of equipment including: femtosecond-pulsed and CW sources of entanglement, superconducting nanowire detectors, and telecom and visible light SLMs. We are funded by generous grants from the UK EPSRC and the European Research Council, with substantial resources available for travel and career development. We have strong links to leadings group in the EU/North America, and additionally benefit from Heriot-Watt's membership in the UK Quantum Communications and Imaging Hubs.
What: This position is part of the ERC Starting Grant PIQUaNT<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcordis.europa.eu%2Fproject%2Fid%2F950402&data=05%7C01%7Calison.yao%40strath.ac.uk%7Ca72882cde80340955c3208da5e0a6325%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637925696844886566%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=wEW%2FQgIsdSrftWzyxBWq%2BNhSKVeTQGpNkTiqH4dA8cs%3D&reserved=0>. You will be involved in cutting-edge research projects focusing on the study of quantum systems significantly beyond the qubit regime. Your research will aim at gaining exquisite control over the spatial and temporal structure of light, with the ultimate goal of pushing the information and noise limits of next-generation quantum technologies for communication, computing, and sensing. You will play an integral role in upcoming projects, ranging from the control and manipulation of time-frequency entanglement to quantum experiments with state-of-the-art superconducting nanowire detector arrays, to name just a few.
This is a role with a significant amount of responsibility. It will involve overseeing all aspects of our group's research-from supervising the activities of junior group members, to contributing to the planning and writing of external grant proposals. There is plenty of flexibility for pursuing your own research agenda as long as it is aligned with lab activities. You will have a strong support network for the development your own career through independent grant/fellowship applications. A willingness and ability to travel globally would be an advantage.
Who: We are looking for a researcher who is extremely passionate about research and as excited about Quantum Mechanics as we are! You should hold (or have submitted) a PhD in Physics or subjects related to Quantum Information or Quantum Engineering, and have experience planning and leading experiments within an experimental photonics lab. A solid background in theoretical quantum information science is essential and experimental experience with photonic entanglement, spatial/temporal mode manipulation, and/or complex scattering media is preferred.
When: We are looking for candidates to start in Fall/Winter 2022. However, if you have a strong interest in the position but are only available at a later stage, please email us with an expression of interest.
How: Please click "Apply Now" at the bottom of the official Heriot-Watt job posting<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fenzj.fa.em3.oraclecloud.com%2FhcmUI%2FCandidateExperience%2Fen%2Fsites%2FCX%2Fjob%2F2151%2F%3Futm_medium%3Djobshare&data=05%7C01%7Calison.yao%40strath.ac.uk%7Ca72882cde80340955c3208da5e0a6325%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637925696844886566%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=wAB%2BPvOzUcOjnT71qGv6JAQ2m5yv%2FPUNoC7dBGiHPks%3D&reserved=0>. The position will close at midnight on July 31st, 2022.
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Mehul Malik at m.malik at hw.ac.uk<mailto:m.malik at hw.ac.uk>. Applications from members of underrepresented groups in Physics are especially encouraged.
Applicants will be asked to provide the following documents:
* CV containing a list of publications and the names of at least two professional references.
* An original piece of their scientific writing (such as a first author manuscript or thesis).
