Dear LTC members, (lengthy e-mail)
Last week the LTC Convener and Vice Convener, with some US officers, met SDS colleagues to discuss their Career Review<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.skillsdevelopmentscotland.co.uk%2Fcareer-review%2F&data=05%7C01%7Cjohn.jeffers%40strath.ac.uk%7C9cdc88e1b929475f105208daa377ffe4%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C638002033024124257%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=aJPmMf7Kjx7zp2YMTzTDXfKiqNAkL%2F6jEd4WDMRTOhY%3D&reserved=0>, and they are looking for participants in some ongoing/future work in the form of ‘changemakers’ and ‘listening sessions’. US agreed to seek expressions of interest from the sector for both, which we are doing now via LTC members. Apologies for the short notice – we have just received the information needed to make contact.
Changemakers
SDS is moving into the next phase of activity for the CR, and is looking to identify changemakers - people who believe they can create change, to work with SDS to help co-design future careers services. SDS has said that by taking a changemaker approach:
* All changemakers will have an equal voice;
* Existing hierarchies will be abandoned at the door;
* Facilitators will amplify the voices of certain participants to ensure this happens, for example where there are more practitioners than young people;
* We also need changemakers to engage with their organisation/sector more widely so they can bring views of others into co-deign workshops and can take workshop outputs back for consultation.
They are looking for three individuals to participate in this next phase, who will be able to contribute to a series of co-design sessions SDS has planned. They would like two individuals to support their work on the Career Development Model (a simple model that defines career services, bringing definition to the variety of careers services across Scotland), and one individual to contribute to the work around Experiential Career Education.
For the Career Development Model<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.skillsdevelopmentscotland.co.uk%2Fcareer-review%2Frecommendations%2Frecommendation-1-a-new-career-development-model%2F&data=05%7C01%7Cjohn.jeffers%40strath.ac.uk%7C9cdc88e1b929475f105208daa377ffe4%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C638002033024124257%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=I9j0p270Ew1EtDYaTJtLYPv4U3CqgAV4k5O0Hlc9uVs%3D&reserved=0> they would like a HE curriculum lead (or similar) and a HE personal tutor (or similar). Participation will be via a series of online workshops, the purpose of which is to finalise the CDM and the experiences identified within it. SDS also aims to develop approaches to measuring the experiences within the model, and describing how the model should be used. In relation to the roles sought, SDS has said that they are looking for a HE curriculum lead who is responsible for incorporating careers-related information into curricula, so a university/school that looks at future employment opportunities as part of the course, and a HE personal tutor who supports students primarily with their academic studies but who might also give careers advice, without having a particular background in careers guidance.
Workshops will be delivered virtually on the following dates:
1. Unlocking Changemaker Mindset session: Friday 7th October (9.30am-3.30pm)
2. Workshop 1: Thursday 27th October (9.30am-12.30pm)
3. Workshop 2: Wednesday 9th November (9.30am-12.30pm)
4. Workshop 3: Thursday 24th November (9.30am-12.30pm)
Ideally, they would like the same people to be involved in all four sessions (the session next week and the following workshops), but if attending next week is limiting they can try to do a catch-up in advance of the three workshops.
If you are willing/able to take part, I would be most grateful if you would let me know at your earliest convenience.
For the Experiential Career Education<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.skillsdevelopmentscotland.co.uk%2Fcareer-review%2Frecommendations%2Frecommendation-4-experiential-career-education%2F&data=05%7C01%7Cjohn.jeffers%40strath.ac.uk%7C9cdc88e1b929475f105208daa377ffe4%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C638002033024124257%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=qTv1jWLi2IQI3rHPxPZ9PG5%2B0uCMfHCq%2BEcS6GBUHSI%3D&reserved=0> they would like a HE academic (ideally someone who works with student work placements as part of their course / from a course that currently offers work placements). SDS’ working definition of ECE is: ‘The opportunity for young people to experience, as core part of their curriculum, a challenge or project based learning experience that uses a work context to help young people understand and develop the skills and habits needed to thrive in a fast changing world. It should offer them the opportunity to explore jobs & careers and link their learning to its application at work and support them to build networks outside of the classroom including with employers’.
The focus of the workshops will be on exploring the current environment for delivering ECE in Scotland, and identifying opportunities for transformation and improvement of work delivered within education and community settings that will support the development of skills that young people need for the future.
Workshops will be delivered virtually on the following dates:
Unlocking Changemaker Mindset session: Friday 7th October (9.30-3.30pm)
1. Workshop 1: Thursday 3rd November 9.30am - 1.30pm
2. Workshop 2: Thursday 10th November 9.30am - 1.30pm
3. Workshop 3: Thursday 24th November 9.30am - 1.30pm
SDS said this is a unique opportunity to get involved in an exciting piece of work which will help shape the future of the careers system in Scotland. They are hoping, despite the challenging timescales and commitment, that people will see the opportunity to support the work, and in some cases it could contribute to CPD.
Again, I would be most grateful if you would let me know if you would like to take part.
Listening Sessions
These sessions aim to provide an overview of the CR recommendations, informed by Universities Scotland’s formal response to them and the session with Principals. They will also provide an opportunity for SDS to listen to HEIs to understand what recommendations are already being delivered in HEIs, and what implementation of the CR might look like in future along with any current or future challenges.
If you are interested in taking part, please let me know. SDS has indicated that the length of the sessions could vary, and have proposed the following timeslots:
11 October, between 12:00 and 14:00; and
13 October between 12:00 and 15:00
Please do let me know if you have any queries, or if anything in the message is unclear.
Thanks and best wishes,
Mark
