To PH450 Supervisors + Potential Assessors (TBA),

The Literature Review/Posters and Progress Reports that have been submitted are available on idrive in separate folders in the main folder, "Science/Physics/project/2022-23_PH450"

Supervisors, I would request the following:

  * Inform me if your project student has not satisfactorily completed the poster literature review (or not handed one in). This component is just a pass/fail, the student should show signs of engagement and some attempt to present the project background and outline should be evident. As long as a genuine attempt has been made, then this can be considered as a pass. If there is lack of engagement and a less than serious attempt made, then students will not pass the course until they satisfy the requirement of completing the poster literature review to a satisfactory level.
  * Review the progress report. Students were asked to concisely summarise their progress and next steps, long essays were not expected. If a progress report has not been submitted, please remind your student to do so. If you have concerns as to the progress of your student, please inform me.

Everyone, regarding talks: These are scheduled for Wednesday's 15th and 22nd February 2023 from 1pm to 5pm nominally. As in pre-pandemic times, these will be in-person, in 3 parallel streams. Students are expected to attend both days, either to present or support their fellow student.

  * I will be assigning the assessment committees for each project soon and will try to arrange it that all three assessors for each project are able to attend the talk (this may not be practical in all cases). Once the assessment committees have been released, I will request notification of unavailability in order to produce the schedule
  * In the meantime, if all academic and research staff could try to make the talks to provide and audience and also assist with marking, that would be much appreciated
  * As usual, academic and more senior research staff are requested to provide talk marks (not just for the students in their own groups), this helps balance out the statistics. Less experienced research may want to gain experience in assessment procedures but provided marks may not be included in the final total.

Regards,
Daniel
4th & 5th Year Project Coordinator
