[Academic] Nuffield summer

Please see the email below, from Debbie Willison and Louise Kelly from the Faculty Outreach Group, regarding funded summer placements for senior secondary school students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

You may already be aware of the Nuffield Research Placements (please see attached). The placements are a fantastic opportunity for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to gain hands-on STEM experience via a two-week placement with a STEM professional in academia or industry. The University of Strathclyde hosted ten students last year across Engineering, SBS and Science (Biomedical Science and Computer Science) and we’d love to see that grow to new departments in Science in 2023. This would hopefully contribute positively to our recruitment of SIMD 0-40 students in the longer term.

To get started with the programme, you can register your interest to provide a placement by creating an account on the Nuffield online system here: nuffieldresearchplacements.org<http://nuffieldresearchplacements.org>

Some initial things to consider would be:
• How many students can you accommodate? (We tend to recommend more than one within a research team for peer support, but supervision can be spread across your team)
• Who will student mentors within your team/ organisation be?
• When will your placements take place? Any two weeks from mid June to the beginning of August
