This e-mail is to announce, at very short notice, a joint Institute of Physics Higher Education Group and Early Career Group meeting for “Early career supervision of PhD students: Best practice and approaching the HEA fellowship”. This meeting will be hosted at Northumbria University on the Friday 8th December, between 11am and 4pm. There is room for 20 attendees, and there is a limited amount of travel support available for train travel to Newcastle on the day. If you would like to attend, please contact Tom Stallard at tom.stallard at northumbria.ac.uk<mailto:tom.stallard at northumbria.ac.uk>. Please let me know if you need support for your travel to the meeting – we won’t be able to support everyone, but some funds are available.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for early career academics and post-doctoral fellows who are newly working with PhD students do share experiences and problems they have faced supervising physics and astrophysics students. We will discuss the UKCGE framework for best supervisorial practice, talking about how it can be used to improve your own supervision and how it specifically relates to physics students. We will also discuss how your work with PhD students can be utilised for upcoming HEA applications. Most importantly, will have extended discussion time to talk about and reflect upon best practice.

The meeting has the following timetable:

11am Greetings and Coffee
11:15 Introductions
11:30 An introduction to the UKCGE framework – with Q&A
12:30 An overview of the HEA teaching fellowships and important overlaps with the UKCGE
13:00 ------- Lunch -------
14:00 Discussions about the major issues faced when working with your first PhD student
15:00 coffee
15:30 Final discussions about reflecting on your supervision and planning what happens next
16:00 Formal ending of meeting

We look forward to your interest in the meeting,

Tom Stallard (HEG)
Helen Vaughan (HEG)
