We have received our annual allocation of what are now called EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award (DLA) (formerly EPSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP)) and University studentship funding under what is jointly termed the John Anderson Research Studentship Scheme (JARSS). We have funding for 5 EPSRC-funded 3.5 year studentships + 6 University-funded 3 year studentships with an expected start date of Oct 2025 (with some flexibility). Some of these will be allocated to cover existing commitments and after consultation with research groups - the remainder will be available for good candidates. As in previous years, applications can be Research Excellence Awards (REA - no named candidate) or Student Excellence Awards (SEA - named , high quality candidate. Requires supporting evidence - see guidance notes).

New this year - EPSRC Collaborative Awards:
The new EPSRC DLA grant mandates that at least 25% of all DLA studentships (=2 for Physics) involve collaboration with a non-academic (non-HEI) partner. For monitoring and reporting purposes, these studentships are identified as 'Collaborative - EPSRC' on the PGR Studentship System. Additional sections have also been added to the application portal to capture the collaborator's role in the project and any in-kind support provided, as the University is required to report this information to EPSRC for all collaborative studentships. For further details on collaborative awards and EPSRC's expectation that the student will also spend at least 3 months hosted by the non-academic collaborating partner, please refer to the attached JARSS guidance (the 3 months with the partner do not need to be undertaken in a single block).

Please note :

  * the expected contribution from supervisors is £5K p.a. Contributions from external sources are encouraged where possible.
  * up to 30% of the EPSRC studentship allocation can be used to fund international candidates. In order to cover the difference between home and international fees (approx. £22K p.a.!), supervisors will have to apply for a Differential Fee Scholarship (DFS) or cover the difference from some other source.
  * There are 2 deadlines for applications : **Friday 13th December ( REA or SEA ) and Friday 25th April 2025 (SEA only)**, but the earlier we can make offers to strong candidates the better.
  * Applications are submitted via the PGR Studentship System (https://pgrapps.strath.ac.uk/)

If you are interested in submitting an application or have questions please get in touch.

I will be giving a presentation on PhD study/opportunities to 4th year/5th year UGs and MSc students in the next couple of weeks - if you want me to advertise a studentship please send me details.

Regards

Gordon
