Hi everyone,

Just a reminder of the guest talk on Tuesday 18th February at 5pm in TL423, Teaching and Learning Building. The talk will be given by Prof Robert Martin of the Semiconductor Spectroscopy and Devices group here in the Department of Physics. Please see the advert below for more details.

Abstract:

The range of impressive devices that can be fabricated from silicon is truly amazing, yet there are good reasons to develop, understand and apply other semiconductor materials. New physics and new applications become possible. This talk will review my journey with compound semiconductors, starting with PhD work using high magnetic fields to study the quantum Hall effect and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in GaSb-based structures. This was followed by work linking to telecoms companies on near-IR devices built around InGaAsP quantum wells. After arriving at Strathclyde I soon got caught up in the wave of development of GaN-based LEDs and transistors. Studies of these materials led to establishment of a range of electron microscope facilities and I'll explain how these are useful in advancing the materials. This has kept my attention for many years, recently going deeper into the UV with AlGaN and then Ga2O3-based materials. Clearly I can't get away from Ga. At some points I managed to diversify into solar cell materials such as CuInSe2 only to find that Ga was needed to get the right bandgap. I will try to convince you of the importance of these Ga-containing semiconducting materials.

Hope to see you all there!

Cheers,

Matt
