Message for all academic staff and PIs of lab-based research:
As you know, the University is planning for the UNITE strike from 10-21 March.
We have been asked to review all safety procedures (e.g. Lab Risk Assessments etc) and update them prior to strike days, and then confirm that appropriate control measures are in place to allow colleagues in Physics/IoP to be on campus safely.
These control measures must take account of the minimal security resource and therefore should not rely on the Security team responding e.g. in relation to evacuating students and staff in the event of an emergency. If you are an experimentalist, please review the safety procedures for your lab activities and confirm to me by Thursday that this has been done as outlined above, and whether or not you can operate as normal.
Staff not working in labs should still be aware of the likely lack of security on campus during the strike.
The University's advice is:
As in similar periods of industrial action it is expected that any higher risk, lab-based research activity that may be throughout the strike days must be kept to a minimum wherever possible given the reduced Security and response capability that we will have. Please consider this appropriately whilst planning for activities during strike action.
I have not heard back from all departmental Fire Wardens and First Aiders yet, but there will be at least 8-11 fire assistants in the JA building, and 6-8 in TIC on any given day during the strike.
Likewise, there will be at least 4-6 First Aiders in the JA building and 4 in the TIC each strike day.
I will circulate details on Friday once I have a more complete list.
I expect there will be an announcement from the Centre at some point if the strike is to go ahead. I believe negotiations are ongoing.
Please let me know if you have any queries.
Thanks,
Gabrielle
