Subject: Lab Software Requests for the Centrally Managed Labs 25/26
Dear Colleagues,
Summary: If you plan to use centrally managed student computing environments for teaching next academic year, you need to tell us now what specialist software you need.
The deadline for all software requests for academic year 25/26 is 30.05.25.
Information Services manage various computing environments which are available to students for timetabled teaching and private study. These include around 1500 desktop PCs in the Library and around the campus. List of pc locations here: https://www.strath.ac.uk/professionalservices/it/use/find-a-computer/
We are currently preparing for the delivery of central student computing for the academic year 2025/26. As in previous years, we need you to tell us what software you require. You cannot assume that software will be available next year simply because it is there this year.
We get audited annually to ensure our devices meet the requirements for Cyber Essentials Plus certification. To maintain this certification we need to justify the software we install each year. For the academic year 2025/26 the standard student pc build on Windows 11, will contain the following core software:
Microsoft Office 365 (inc. Teams)
Adobe Reader
Microsoft Edge
7-Zip
VLC Media Player
Zoom
Google Chrome
All other software products - even if site-licensed - must be explicitly requested each academic year.
We will also be installing the software requests on the Student Windows Virtual Desktop, with the exception of applications that cannot run on a virtual environment.
To do so, a service request should be submitted via https://helpdesk.strath.ac.uk/support/catalog/items/180
Before submitting your request, please ensure that the license agreement permits the usage you require. Trial software does not normally permit deployment for teaching. If you are unsure, please contact the vendor of the software for clarification. If the software you are requesting is licensed, can you please ensure that the license key covers the full duration of the academic year.
All software will have the default installation unless configuration changes are requested within the above request form.
Kind Regards,
Lauren Feeley
