Dear all,
I would like to invite everyone to join yet another seminar tomorrow:
Speaker: Dr Georgios Siviloglou, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Title: Ultracold rubidium atoms in optical lattices
Date: Monday, 20/1/14
Time: 2.00 pm
Location: JA 8.13 (SUPA Room)
Abstract: Loading ultracold atomic gases in optically induced lattices is an indispensable ingredient in realizing interesting Hamiltonians and thus a cornerstone of quantum emulation. In this talk we will first discuss how Bragg scattering of light off an atomic crystal can probe the superfluid to Mott insulator transition and provide insight to the evolution of quantum wavefunctions. Finally, we will report on the recent observation of the celebrated Harper-Hofstadter Hamiltonian - known to govern the motion of electrons under the influence of a uniform magnetic field - in a system of ultracold rubidium atoms.
Best regards,
Stefan
