All,
below are details of next week's seminar - please note that the talk will be at 2 o'clock. The visitor, Peter Barker, will be in the department most of the day. If anyone wishes to arrange some time for discussion with him then please let me know.
Speaker: Peter Barker, UCL
Title: From molecules to the mesoscale: Cooling and manipulating complex particles
When: Wednesday, 29th Jan at 2pm
Location: JA 8.11
Abstract:
There is currently considerable interest in exploring the quantum nature of the motion of particles, ranging from simple molecular species to much larger particles on the nanoscale. Of particular interest to us is the exploration of chemistry between molecular species that is dominated by resonance and tunnelling phenomena, as well as the observation of quantum superposition of much more massive nanoscale particles. An important requirement for all of these schemes is the ability to cool and control the centre-of-mass motion. While cooling methods are well developed for many atomic species they are not yet well established for these more complex species. In this talk I will describe a number of laser methods that we are developing to cool trapped molecules as well as nanoscale and microscale particles levitated in vacuum.
Regards,
Griff
