Prof Deborah Kane, who is visiting the Optics Division as a SUPA Distinguished Visitor, will give a presentation this Wednesday at 3pm, in JA8.13 (SUPA Room). This talk should be of particular interest to early-career researchers, though I'm sure all researchers will find it illuminating.

regards,
Griff

Date: Wednesday, 4th June
Time: 3 pm
Location: SUPA Room, JA8.13
Speaker: Prof Deborah Kane, Macquarie University, Sydney
Title: "Physversity"
Abstract:
As an “individual” research career the presenter’s has traversed fundamental, strategic and applied research. This aspect of physics diversity is identified as an important topic for thought and action in professional and career development. The capability to approach any research topic from any of these perspectives can be a relative advantage. The capability to travel between them is worth building. The capability to see how one’s own set of expertise and ignorance can become over-constraining to the potential detriment of making a more optimal contribution to science and the community is discussed. The important aspiration to be a person who gets to do a fair amount of things they want to do rather than a lot of things they’re told to do is embedded in this discussion. The topics for reflection are illustrated with specific research activities in photonics; lasers & lamps, and their applications.
