[Cnqo] CNQO cluster

Hello,

To clarify things:


  *   Wildebeest is the login server for the CNQO servers and cluster. Logins can be made using SSH or ThinLinc. There are 25 client licenses for ThinLinc on the server. Logins are possible from off campus as well.
  *   Wildebeest is also the license server for Mathematica for a couple of research groups
  *   Wildebeest is a virtual server with 4 CPUs, 16GB RAM, so it's not a big server.
  *   Phys-porpoise is the server with JupyyterHub installed
  *   Phys-porpoise also has a free version of ThinLinc for the SMBP group, to access and post process their research results.
  *   Phys-porpoise has 16 cores, 128GB RAM, so has more heft

We think the current issues with Wildebeest running slow are mostly to do with the Gnome desktop performing background searches on home folders, which is resource intensive.

The plan is to migrate Wildebeest in the next fortnight to a newer version of Linux, and to use a less intensive desktop. I hope that will resolve these issues.

Dear CNQO folks,

Some of you are using wildebeest as ThinLinc server. After the reboot on Wednesday, the load average is now up again to 6, but this is not reflected in top (see below).

Could you please refrain from using wildebeest as ThinLinc server as it impairs other users. Please use phys-porpoise instead. On Wednesday, Timothy said "Please only use Wildebeest as a login server. It's not big enough to run demanding jobs locally." ThinLinc is such a demanding job.

In order to use phys-porpoise as ThinLinc server whilst off-campus you need to connect via VPN. It works marvellously and I do it all the time! Any questions, please feel free to drop me a line.
