Dear all,
I have recently been informed about an incident on Campus when a passenger lift stopped working and the occupant decided to force open the lift car doors to exit the lift. Fortunately nobody was injured but this unsafe act had the potential for serious or fatal injury since power is still supplied to the lift and it may come back into operation at any time. This could result in body parts being trapped if the lift does start moving or people could fall into an open lift shaft.
In the event if you are inside a lift when it breaks down:
* Press the "door open" button to check if it is working.
* Press the alarm or help button in the lift. Instructions for use are detailed in all lifts. The alarm button is connected to a help desk who will in turn arrange for the despatch of the trained rescue personnel and you will be released within 1 hour maximum, and in most cases very much quicker.
* Stay calm, there is enough air circulating within the lift car and lift shaft.
* On no account must you attempt to release yourself or others on your own and you must wait for the arrival of trained rescue personnel.
Kind regards
