[Physstaff] Supervising Duties

Dear All,

Due to an incident, involving an undergraduate undertaking a project in a research laboratory in TIC, last Friday.
May I remind Those of you, who are, supervising an undergraduate in their research area, of your legal responsibility for the safety of that student.

Your duties required for the person you supervise are :-


*         Demonstrating leadership in occupational health and safety for your area of work activity, research and/or training activity, which will include the occupational health and safety performance of the area and ensuring health and safety arrangements are in place for all work activities.


*         Ensuring suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out for all work conducted in their area of responsibility and that this covers all staff, students and persons who may be affected by the work.


*         Ensuring the adequate supervision of all staff, students and visitors as appropriate and in line with the University Policy.


Undergraduate students, under Occupational Health and Safety legislation are deemed ,'Higher Risk', due to inexperience and lack of awareness of Health & Safety in the workplace.
As such, their Risk Assessments must cover:-


*         Details of the work activity, including any equipment or hazardous substance.

*         Details of any prohibited equipment or processes in the area.

*         Details of training provided.

*         Details of supervision arrangements.

*         Details of local emergency arrangements, (fire evacuation procedures, etc.)

Please note - we will be including these procedures during the forthcoming Safety Audit of all departmental research and teaching laboratories.
