Dear all,

Please see blew sent on behalf of the Careers Service

Immigration options for students nearing the end of their studies

We would like to draw your attention to three options open to Tier 4 students who are considering staying on in the UK after their studies for work or business purposes. Please note that these options all include detailed requirements and students should seek further advice before planning to follow any of the routes outlined below:

1) Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneurs

This scheme, introduced last year, has been extended and now includes a special provision for MBA graduates. Graduates who intend to stay in the UK to establish a business may benefit from this scheme. Then University has been allocated a ten places for graduates of any discipline and ten further places for students who have graduated with an MBA.

Students applying under this scheme are sponsored by the University. They must have a genuine and credible business idea and meet the personal requirements. Successful applicants will be given permission to stay for one year (with a possible extension for a second year). Students who enter the scheme after April 2013 will be free to work unrestricted hours alongside developing their business.

The next Tier 1 Panel to consider your business idea will take place on Wed 22nd May. To have your business idea considered, you must submit your proposal to Katy Gordon, on katy.gordon at strath.ac.uk<mailto:katy.gordon at strath.ac.uk> before5pm on Wed 15th May.

Students interested in this scheme should contact the Careers Service for further advice about how to develop and assess their business idea and the Information and Advice team for further information about the immigration requirements of the scheme.

2) Doctoral Extension Scheme

This new scheme allows students nearing the end of their PhD to apply for permission to stay for a further year in order to look for work or establish a business. This scheme is an extension of Tier 4 status and students using this route will continue to be ‘sponsored’ by the University under Tier 4 and will be required to contact the Information and Advice team on a regular basis. Students who extend their stay under this scheme will be permitted to work full time and/or take up self-employment.

Applications must be submitted up to 60 days prior to completion of their PhD. The timing of the application is crucial and students must also ensure they can meet all the personal requirements of the scheme. Students interested in this option should contact the Information and Advice team for more information.

E mail: tier4 at strath.ac.uk<mailto:tier4 at strath.ac.uk>

3) Tier 2 employment

Students who secure a graduate level job with an appropriate salary may be able to apply to stay in the UK under Tier 2 of the Points Based Immigration system. Under this route permission to stay is tied to a specific job with a particular employer. Students need to have secured appropriate employment before their current Tier 4 visa expires and will need to ensure that the job and their employer meet the requirements of the scheme and that they can meet the personal and financial requirements.
