Latest COVID-19 guidance
Last week the First Minister announced that the temporary lockdown will continue until at least the middle of February 2021. This follows the Scottish Government’s recent announcement on international travel and quarantine<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/1edkqluwjngxru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=58619711&t=31139365> and also the publication of renewed guidance for the university and college sector<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/i63x5cxxyluxru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=58619711&t=31139365>.
This latest publication provides further detail on the current period of lockdown restrictions and how these apply to universities.

The PAM Assist service provides staff with:
1. Access to personal counselling – by phone, face to face (currently suspended due to COVID-19), secure video, email, text or even on-line chat
2. Access to our extensive website where you’ll find invaluable information and signposting on many of life’s health and wellbeing issues
3. Access to expert advice on legal and debt matters
4. Telephone support when you just need to speak with someone at any time of the day or night

Principal Professor Sir Jim McDonald has been appointed as an International Economic Adviser to Shandong Province in China.
Sir Jim joins a newly-established conference of internationally renowned business people, academics and entrepreneurs. It will provide professional advice for scientific decision-making and economic and social development in Shandong.
Shandong has a population of nearly 100 million and has an economy based on agriculture and a range of industries, including energy, information technology, medicine and financial services.

Part of a revolutionary UK-first trial
Aerial drones could soon be delivering blood, organs and medical supplies in Scotland as part of a revolutionary UK-first trial involving researchers at the University of Strathclyde.
The CAELUS project will involve live flight trials of drones in the second half of 2021.
The 18-month long trial is being led by a consortium of 14 academic and industry partners headed by AGS Airports, owners of Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton airports and could ‘revolutionise the way in which healthcare services are delivered’.

Recognising research to improve lives of pancreatic cancer patients
A Chemistry PhD student at the University of Strathclyde has won a prestigious Scotland-wide award from the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland.
Lauren Evans is the 2020 recipient of the Robertson Medal, presented annually by the Trust to the most outstanding student on its PhD scholarship programme.
Lauren was chosen from the 12 students awarded scholarships from an original list of 62 applicants. Her research focuses on developing treatments for pancreatic cancer, which is the fourth largest cause of cancer death in the world and for which current therapies are effective on fewer than a quarter of patients.

The Virtual Exchange Teaching (VET) programme
School pupils in Scotland are being taught Mandarin online by teachers in China during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The language lessons are normally given face-to-face in the classroom by exchange students from China but they have been unable to travel owing to global travel restrictions.
Instead, lessons are being streamed live from the students’ own universities to pupils in Scotland, to ensure they continue to have an insight into the language and culture of the world’s most populous nation.
The 10-week pilot course is being taught to primary and secondary pupils.

Semester two elections take place this month
[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v2files/shard1/85313/db/59ce587f5234794964ecfc.png]Student representatives play an important role in all areas of university life, acting as a liaison between staff and the wider student body and ensuring that the student voice is heard – never more important than at this challenging time.
The StrathReps project is a joint venture between the Union and the University to create new, consistent and interactive ways of conducting the nomination, voting and election of Student Reps.
Due to the current circumstances, this project has become even more important in providing a remote way for reps to be democratically elected.
