Hello all,
The next Qtech talk will be held this Wednesday 17th February at 11am. It will be given by Sean Bommer from the University of Strathclyde.
Hybrid integrated AlGaAs ring resonators for non-linear photonics
The field of integrated photonics aims to shrink down optical circuitry into a compact and stable platform, this miniaturized design allows us to take advantage of various optical properties such as non-linear effects with minimal output power, and device multiplexing to increase effective throughput.
This increase of device stability comes with an increase in fabrication complexity, where multi-material devices can require lengthy processes with each step calling for careful calibration. One technique that is utilised in the Institute of Photonics at Strathclyde is a device level transfer printing that facilitates transfer of small 'coupons' with prefabricated photonic structures onto larger non-native substrates. This micro assembly process alleviates some fabrication restrictions present in whole chip transfer systems by means of sub-micron level positional accuracy of transferred devices.
This design process allows for multi material devices to be fabricated in a well optimised batched processing manner. The AlGaAs material platform demonstrates excellent four wave mixing properties, ideal for fabrication of micro cavities with high photon pair generation rates. The design freedom allotted by the transfer printing technique allows for modelling work in finite element analysis software to influence the final design freely, and produce hybrid devices with optimised performance.
