Believed to be the first dedicated biomedical engineering building in the world

The Wolfson Centre is home to the Department of Biomedical Engineering<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/pqi80zk6k9mxru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=58858686&t=31139365>, one of the oldest seats of biomedical education and research in the world and rated first in the UK for Medical Technology in four of the past five years by the Complete University Guide.
The building has undergone a complete refurbishment in its laboratory, teaching and office spaces with the transformation supported by £1.7m in donations from friends, supporters and alumni of Strathclyde.

Take the juggling challenge

This is a skill you can learn on your own or with friends and family. It’s great fun, relaxing, but it also builds hand-eye coordination in ways that improves reaction time, reflexes, and spatial awareness.

In 2020, over 300 teaching staff engaged 25,000 students across the UK in discussion around the SDGs and their relevance to their subject.

Strathclyde has recorded its third win of the 2020-21 series of the BBC’s University Challenge, after defeating Birkbeck, University of London 135-105.
The team pulled back after their opponents had established an early lead and they remained ahead or level until the gong. In the course of the match, they displayed their knowledge of subjects including tennis champions, capital cities, the art of Tracey Emin and Japanese history.

The University of Strathclyde has been rated as ‘Excellent’ in our first review from employer partners for delivery of our Degree Apprenticeship (DA) programmes.
As part of formal registration as an approved Apprenticeship Training Provider in England, employers with apprentices undertaking a DA programme are asked to rate training providers.
Rating is based on a list of attributes, identifying what a provider does well with an overall rating ranging from poor to excellent given based on the quality of the service.

Undertaken at the CERN Linear Electron Accelerator for Research (CLEAR) facility
A radiotherapy technique which ‘paints’ tumours by targeting them precisely, and avoiding healthy tissue, has been devised in research led by the University of Strathclyde.
Researchers used a magnetic lens to focus a Very High Electron Energy (VHEE) beam to a zone of a few millimetres. Concentrating the radiation into a small volume of high dose will enable it to be rapidly scanned across a tumour, while controlling its intensity.
It is being proposed as an alternative to other forms of radiotherapy, which can risk non-tumorous tissue becoming overexposed to radiation.

An aversion to light has long been a survival tactic used by the smallest creatures in our ocean, but research co-led by the University of Strathclyde has discovered this photophobia may already be protecting them against impacts of environmental changes in the Arctic.
Known as zooplankton, these microscopic creatures swim hundreds of metres every day, up and down the water column in response to the changing light. By staying deep below the surface during the daytime, they can avoid predators. Only during the relative safety of night can they come nearer the surface to feed on phytoplankton.
Dr Laura Hobbs, Research Associate in Strathclyde’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics and Researcher with Strathclyde and the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), is lead author of the report.

Four-year study involving 12 partners in eight countries
Researchers at the University of Strathclyde are part of an international study creating new photonic tools for accessing the deep brain, for the study and treatment of neurological diseases.
Strathclyde is the sole UK participant in DEEPER (Deep Brain Photonic Tools for Cell-Type Specific Targeting of Neural Diseases), which is investigating the deep-brain alterations underlying the origin of neurological and psychiatric diseases.
Researchers in Strathclyde’s Institute of Photonics and the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences will be developing optoelectronic devices to interface with the brain. This will allow the use of light to stimulate neurons, to further understanding of dementia, depression, addiction, schizophrenia and chronic pain.

The hub brings together advanced robotics with sensing technology to enable in–process inspection of high value composite and metal components.
Non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies including ultrasonic phased array, laser ultrasound and eddy-current inspection, will allow our researchers to help manufacturing and repair industries check the quality of components and make them quicker, easier and at lower cost.
