Subject: A post doctoral job opportunity for physicist [circulate]
The Northern Centre for cancer Care is looking for a physicist who has recently completed, or is close to completing, their PhD and who wants to work towards becoming a clinical scientist in the field of Radiotherapy Physics. This involves working for 3 years as a pre-registrant radiotherapy physicist in Newcastle upon Tyne's freeman hospital. The NHS Jobs reference is: https://www.jobs.nhs.uk/xi/vacancy/916403874<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jobs.nhs.uk%2Fxi%2Fvacancy%2F916403874&data=04%7C01%7Caudrey.mckinnon%40strath.ac.uk%7Ce1cfa7f83f544f33dee508d8d9dc6783%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637498887946344815%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=K5iktOhpno8xxmq9ojo3euDX7SZ06QOo1ObeveYxBsA%3D&reserved=0>
Would it be possible for you to pass this on to any of your students who might be interested? If I have contacted the wrong person then please accept my apology and I would be grateful if you could let me know who I should write to.
The successful candidate will work towards professional registration as a Clinical Scientist which allows the individual to be employed as a radiotherapy physicist in any Cancer Centre in the UK and many abroad.
A radiotherapy physicist is a physicist who works in a hospital primarily to ensure accuracy and safety when radiation is used for therapeutic purposes. The role is wide ranging and requires application of the physics of radiation interactions in tissue and other materials, as well as general scientific principles, to all aspects of the clinical use of radiation. It is a mix of practical, theoretical, management, teaching, research & development work. The work is part service delivery (for example quality control or patient dose measurement) and part research and development (for example development of processes to analyse 3D Compton scattered MV images or writing software to predict the outcome of alternative treatment plans). The links below give some insight into the role. The most common route into the profession is by formal training through an accredited scheme but this alternative route of direct training in a clinic is more suited to physicists who already have research experience as well as strong physics knowledge.
Anyone who thinks they might be interested might find the links below useful and they should contact Dr Judith Mott (Judith.Mott1 at nhs.net<mailto:Judith.Mott at nuth.nhs.uk>) to find out more about the role. There is of course other information on the internet that they could equally look at.
