Actions taken in response to staff feedback


[Professor Sir Jim McDonald]At our Principal's Engagement Sessions, I committed to updating you on the progress we have made since we issued our first Staff Wellbeing Survey in February.



Almost 700 colleagues responded to the survey, which asked key questions around: the Wellbeing and Working from Home Hub; Meeting-Free Fridays; and, Rest and Recuperation Fridays.

New guidance


[Woman wearing face mask]Our COVID-19 Asymptomatic Test Centre closed last week in response to the fall in demand for testing during the quieter summer period.



The Test Centre has played a key role in helping to keep our campus-based students and staff safe over the past few months.



Staff and students are now encouraged to obtain lateral flow test kits, allowing tests to be conducted at home, by ordering them online, over the telephone or by picking them up at a community collection point.



Tests should continue to be carried out twice a week.

Programme entering its eighth year

The course, a partnership between the University, City of Glasgow College, Glasgow Supported Employment team and Autism Network Scotland, provides work placements (internships) for young autistic people or people with a learning disability, so they can develop their skills and become ready for work.

Samia Afzal Award for Outstanding Pupil Achievement


The colleagues of a Strathclyde education worker who tragically passed away aged just 25 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour have created a special award in her honour.



Samia Afzal, an Educational Liaison Officer at the University of Strathclyde, was passionate about her work with the Glasgow Children's University<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/1o1gtfftcwixru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=59696288&t=31139333>.



After her premature death in 2019, her University workmates created the annual Glasgow Children's University 'Samia Afzal Award for Outstanding Pupil Achievement'.



It reflects her love of the role and the opportunities the programme gives for additional learning experiences for children and young people.

Almost 60% of entrepreneurs in India predict a long-term positive impact of COVID-19 on their businesses, a report has found.



The report by researchers from the University of Strathclyde and King’s College London<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/1k8esho79elxru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=59696288&t=31139333> found that, despite nearly a third of SMEs being forced to lay-off staff, more than half were able to capture new business opportunities during lockdown.

The University of Strathclyde has appointed Dick Elsy, the recently retired Chief Executive Officer of the UK’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult, as an Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Engineering.



Professor Elsy will bring his expertise to Scotland’s largest Faculty of Engineering on issues relating to engineering innovation and advanced manufacturing.



The University is renowned for setting new standards in manufacturing and design, and is home to the Advanced Forming Research Centre and the Lightweight Manufacturing Centre.

Two Strathclyde teams have reached the Grand Final of a global competition where engineering students design real world solutions to issues faced by two coastal communities in Peru.

Stroke survivors, carers and health professionals, researchers and industry came together at a virtual public launch of the Sir Jules Thorn Centre for Co-creation of Rehabilitation Technology at the University as part of Engage Week.



The innovative centre aims to revolutionise rehabilitation by developing cutting edge technology through a novel co-creation approach with the rehabilitation community. A large part of the funding from the Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust is intended to procure commercially available equipment which can be adapted for innovative use.



The Trust supports outstanding research and the development of new care models for people living with disabilities.
