Yesterday (9 August) saw the removal of many restrictions as Scotland moves beyond COVID protection Level Zero – the clearest sign yet that, thanks to the vaccination programme, the impact of COVID-19 is lessening significantly.
Protection measures will still be required, including the wearing of face coverings in all the same indoor settings as is currently the case, unless you are exempt.
On physical distancing, even though the law will not require a specific distance, the Scottish Government continues to advise that, especially indoors, people should keep a reasonable distance from other people and avoid places that are crowded.
In keeping with this measured approach, the University's Executive Team has endorsed the recommendation of the e-First Group to continue with physical distancing across campus.

Innovation in an era of disruption

The theme of the conference, held last month, was ‘Innovation in an Era of Disruption’, which was exactly the approach taken in order to successfully deliver such a large, complex and high-level event in this format.

We are now recruiting mentors and mentees to take part in a brand-new EPSRC-funded pilot reciprocal mentoring programme that aims to increase awareness of the challenges of building an academic career for those who are from one or more groups underrepresented amongst university leaders and senior staff in UK higher education, including women, LGBT+ people, BAME (Black Asian Minority Ethnic) people, and people with disabilities.

Applicants are actively sought from people who have lived experience of the youth justice systems. Parents/carers of someone who has experienced these systems are also encouraged to apply.
This expertise will assist the EGG and CYCJ in keeping the voice and lives of children and young people in conflict with the law in mind during decision making.

Could drastically reduce the time it takes to get an ambulance safely back on the road to save lives
A novel microwave sterilisation method that could revolutionise the way ambulances and hospitals are disinfected has been created in research involving the University of Strathclyde.
At present, sterilisation is done manually with conventional techniques that use chemicals. This can take around 30 to 40 minutes to disinfect a single ambulance. During this time, the ambulance is out of action, putting increasing pressure on emergency services during busy times.
The possibility of the new technique could drastically reduce the time it takes to get an ambulance safely back on the road to save lives.

The University of Strathclyde is part of a consortium created to develop more sustainable aircraft capable of short-haul operations across the Highlands and Islands.
Strathclyde has partnered with Loganair, Rolls-Royce and the Centre for Modelling & Simulation (CFMS) for the six-month project, which is also being supported by Scottish Enterprise.
As well as looking at creating an aircraft capable of short-haul operations, the group will assess the ability of the Scottish Aviation supply chain to support the industrialisation of such a product.

The company has shown that its innovative testing technology, the Dxcover® Liquid Biopsy, is effective even in the earlier days of cancer growth, at a smaller volume and lower stage.
According to Cancer Research UK, 12,000 people in Britain are diagnosed with brain tumours every year and survival rates are as low as 12% five years after diagnosis.

In order to celebrate the achievements of the Age-Friendly Academy (AFA)<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/183kxfuarvmxru4xfpp9cz/external?email=true&a=5&p=59979323&t=31355932> since its launch in 2017, The Centre for Lifelong Learning have recently developed an Age-Friendly Academy Impact Report.
Over the past four years, the AFA has brought together and showcased activities already being delivered at the University, as well as developing new opportunities for collaboration, both internally and externally.
This has all been aimed at promoting positive ageing across the lifespan, breaking down barriers and changing perceptions of what a university is and who it is for. The AFA sends a clear message that Strathclyde offers something for everyone regardless of age or stage in life.
The report gives overview of achievements from the launch of the AFA until now, including the measures it has taken to adapt its work in response to COVID-19 and its hopes for life post-COVID.

As part of the MSc Environmental Entrepreneurship in Practice programme Louise Thomson helped a global oil and gas firm to cut waste and now, with help from Strathclyde Inspire, she's developed her own women's wear sustainable activewear brand.
