[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v3files/shard1/85313/46/a66d3a5fa1267029745d37.jpg]Following the naming of Strathclyde as European Entrepreneurial University of the Year at the Triple E Awards<https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/cvg4pnmkid/pzczblucwtzw5sb93d38j4/external?email=true&a=5&p=63249094&t=31139365> in Barcelona a fortnight ago, the Principal, Professor Sir Jim McDonald, with the support of his Executive Team, has decided to mark this fantastic achievement by providing an additional day of annual leave for all staff to be added to colleagues' 2023/24 annual leave allowance.
Sir Jim said: "I am proud of the way in which colleagues demonstrate our shared values on a daily basis, and the University is equally dedicated to being a socially-progressive employer, investing in our staff and providing an environment in which everyone can thrive."

Advance warning: VPN unavailable due to essential maintenance

[https://universityofstrathclyde.newsweaver.com/v3files/shard1/85313/87/90bd644dafc434637a4575.png]While the University is closed on Fair Friday (14 July), Information Services will be conducting essential maintenance on the end user VPN service to which the Fortinet FortiClient software connects.
This will result in the service, which many people use for remote access to campus services, being unavailable for periods of time during that day, and should be considered at risk between 8am and 4pm.
The works are necessary to improve resilience, fix bugs and patch security issues.

Knovel is an online library of full-text content from many different publishers, including reference handbooks, conference proceedings and databases. Strathclyde’s world-leading Continuous Manufacturing and Advanced Crystallisation (CMAC) medicines manufacturing research centre, has received a new £11 million award from the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF) to deliver the CMAC Data Lab: A Digital Medicine Manufacturing Research Accelerator.
This significant capital investment is CMAC’s third award from UKRPIF continuing its strategic approach to establishing world-class research infrastructure for medicines manufacturing. The award secures an additional co-investment of £23.73 million from CMAC industry and charity partners.

Professor Deepak G Uttamchandani, Head of the Centre for Microsystems and Photonics (CMP) in the Faculty of Engineering, has been awarded the 2024 IEEE Joseph F. Keithley Award in Instrumentation and Measurement, from IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organisation advancing technology for the benefit of humanity, in recognition of his contributions at the forefront of photonics innovation. Professor Uttamchandani is only the second UK-based recipient since the award was established in 2001.

Renewable energy delivery from ocean tides, and the contribution of tidal stream energy to net zero goals, are to be supported through a £7million investment in research co-led at Strathclyde.
Researchers working to cut carbon emissions and boost energy security using tidal stream power are set to benefit from the investment by EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council).

Professor Keith Bell, of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, has been awarded a three-year appointment to the Chair of Future Power Systems, sponsored by SP Energy Networks.
He will lead research into meeting the challenges of electricity network planning, design, operation and maintenance when accommodating new low carbon power generation capacity. This will include how to meet increased demand for electricity from the likes of heating pumps and electric vehicles – which will be vital to meet targets for reduction of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions.
