Dear all,
we have been approached by a group at Kinning Park Complex to ask for support in running an event as part of British Science Week. Kinning Park Complex is a community-owned and community-run centre in a relatively under-supported area – https://www.kinningparkcomplex.org. The area is in the SIMD range that we are trying to connect with, plus it supports a number of children for whom english isn’t their first language and I think our own diversity can help support thus. For example, I believe there are a number of kids from Ecuador who use the facility, and they would be delighted if we had some spanish speakers.
In previous years Kinning Park Complex have organised events as part of the Glasgow Science Festival but they have found this a mixed blessing – being part of the Science Festival attracted crowds of confident and “engaged” children from across Glasgow, which then limited the access for local kids. The hope for the British Science Festival is to run it as a local, family-focussed day. The interactive exhibits that the physics department puts on would fit in really well for this kind of day. The organisers will also put on a poster session for the children about what they have learned.
The event would be from 11am-3pm on Sunday, 17th March. If anyone would like to be involved then please do let me know and I will finalise the plans for Physics. We have already organised support from Maths and, hopefully, from SIPBS.
Regards,
Griff
