Subject: 2021: invitation to nominate to panels
Dear Colleague,
You will doubtless be aware that the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021) process is now underway. You can see details of this on the HEFCE website at http://www.hefce.ac.uk/pubs/rereports/year/2017/ref201701/
The HEFCE deadlines for nominations are:
Sub-panel Chairs: noon on Wednesday 11 October
Sub-panel members: TBA, later this autumn
On behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society (designated as one of the endorsing bodies) we would therefore like to invite you to nominate candidates to serve on the following sub-panels:
B7: Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences
B9: Physics
B10: Mathematical Sciences
The following criteria could be considered for panel members and chairs:
1) Nominations for sub-panel chairs. See http://www.ref.ac.uk/media/ref/content/expanel/member/Main%20Panel%20B%20-%20Final%20List%20(Jan%202015).pdf<http://www.ref.ac.uk/media/ref/content/expanel/member/Main%20Panel%20B%20-%20Final%20List%20(Jan%202015).pdf)>. Candidates will need to apply directly to HEFCE, and seek endorsement from the RAS or another subject association.
2) Nominations for sub-panel members. We suggest you nominate individuals both within your department and across the UK, and consider those that served on the REF 2014 sub-panels.
3) Nominations for sub-panel members from the user community, who will have an appreciation for the impact of research in astronomy, space science and / or geophysics.
All nominations received will be treated with the strictest of confidence.
A primary consideration is of course the expertise of the individuals involved. In order to augment the representation of astronomy, space and planetary science in the panel, we suggest that you try to identify knowledgeable individuals with sufficient breadth that they will be able to contribute to the evaluation of a number of sub-disciplines in the Earth and Planetary sciences. We also expect that the nominees will reflect our commitment to diversity.
Please contact me if you have any suggestions for nominees, or indeed if you wish to offer your services for this process.
Best wishes and many thanks for your help in this matter
Robert
