The IoP's Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship Fund (BBGSF) is now open for
applications from students who wish to study for a PhD in Physics.
The fund aims to encourage greater diversity in Physics by supporting
students from groups which are currently under-represented (see fund
guide below for details).
Further information about the fund and the application form can be found at
https://beta.iop.org/bellburnellfund
Eligibility criteria etc. can be found in the fund guide at
https://beta.iop.org/sites/default/files/2019-11/Bell-Burnell-Guide.pdf
The Department, as an Athena Swan award holder, is eligible to support
up to two scholarship applications.
The fund provides up to 50% of PhD studentship costs for up to 4 years,
with the remainder coming from a combination of contributions from the
Faculty, Department & supervisor/group. This will require ~£2k p.a. from
the supervisor/group towards fees and stipend, plus any additional
project costs e.g. travel & subsistence, training support.
The application process is :
1. The candidate student first makes an application for admission to PhD
Physics here via pgr.strath.ac.uk
Candidates must also submit a project abstract, CV, statement on
/Background and need for a BBGSF grant/ and /Personal statement/ to
pgstudies at phys.strath.ac.uk, following the guidance (including word
limits) provided in section 1.3 of the application guidance notes, for
our internal assessment.
2. Applications received before *Friday 13th December* will be assessed
internally and two will be selected to go forward from the Department.
This assessment will be based primarily on how well the candidate
aligns to the eligibility criteria for the scheme and the candidate's
academic quality. Note that interviews may be held, depending on the
number of applicants (the student selection process for the BBGSF scheme
is part of the criteria considered by the Institute of Physics in the
national competition).
3. The two selected applicants each apply to the IoP by *10th January at
noon*.
If you want any additional information, please get in touch.
