Sent on behalf of the Head of Department:
Dear All,
Due to the potential for further rounds of the EPSRC Core Equipment or similar schemes by which further EPSRC equipment funding may become available, departments have been asked to provide RKES with information on Unmet Core Needs and Wider Capital Needs – these two categories are defined further below. This will enable the University to react quickly if additional funding becomes available.
We have been given a quick turnaround time to provide this information and therefore ask for you to please send your input, on the attached forms, to Gabrielle Weir by no later than 5pm on Monday 17th August 2020.
Unmet Core Needs
* Funding that could be spent quickly and meets the scope of the EPSRC Core Equipment call.
* This is to respond to a potential funding opportunity.
* Equipment value may range from £10k to £400k. However, with the considered value of potential funding here for the University (up to £350k), we would expect to be seeing items in the range of £30k - £50k which meet the outlined criteria.
* Additional funding/faculty/departmental contributions can be included towards items. Please detail where this is the case.
* The main need here is for spend to take place by March 31 2021.
Wider Capital Needs
* Any wider capital needs that you have that could be factored into EPSRC Spending Review bids.
* The purpose of this is to gather information to inform EPSRC about future needs for their spending review preparations. It is expected that any funding available will be applied for in the normal way, but there is no commitment on either side at this stage.
* This could include an item that may be in your pipeline for future rounds of EPSRC strategic equipment, institutional facilities that might need replacing/upgrading in the short-medium term, or very large infrastructure bids you might be considering.
* Ongoing unmet need in the core equipment can be included here, along with equipment that is of similar scale which does not meet the core equipment remit.
* There is no limit put on this list, EPSRC are interested in the breadth and scale of unmet needs. With no direct pot of funding available for this, at this stage, it will feed into the wider EPSRC spending review planning.
Best wishes,
Paul
