Dear colleagues
As part of a national enforcement activity to access HEI compliance with the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbd.int%2Fabs%2F&data=04%7C01%7Ccath.cheshire%40strath.ac.uk%7Ca6ae783c866f473e006d08d925184e2b%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637581608575476390%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=MyWg2dA%2BsNLlca3KVEBoD23fIahfHJdTvoOUvDgWXQk%3D&reserved=0>, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) within the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has asked that we provide them with a list of all research projects which involve genetic material (any plant, animal, microbial, or other origin) sourced from overseas for research and development purposes. The deadline for our response is 22 June 2021.
To assist us with compiling this list and collating the required supporting evidence to show due diligence, I would be grateful if you could identify all research projects within your department/faculty which meet the following conditions:
1. Involves the use of genetic resources (plants, animals, microbes, fungi, other - but not human) accessed from overseas.
2. Genetic material was obtained from 12 October 2014 onwards.
3. Does not fall within the remit of the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB) (who will provide details of any relevant project licences).
In determining if research is in scope of the Protocol, you may find the following checklist (compiled by the University of Cambridge) useful - https://www.research-operations.admin.cam.ac.uk/files/policies_and_procedures/checklist_for_researchers_0.pdf
Please email your project lists (detailing the funder, Strathclyde PI/CIs and project title) to research-integrity at strath.ac.uk<mailto:research-integrity at strath.ac.uk> by 11 June 2021.
Should you require any advice or assistance, please don't hesitate to get in touch with either Andrew MacKenzie (andrew.mackenzie at strath.ac.uk<mailto:andrew.mackenzie at strath.ac.uk>) or myself (helen.l.young at strath.ac.uk<mailto:helen.l.young at strath.ac.uk>).
Best wishes
Helen
