Colleagues,

You may have seen the notice on Inside Strathclyde this week to advise that the Teaching Room Utilisation survey will be carried out in person for all timetabled rooms next week, (w/c 24th October)

The data procured through this survey is going to be critical to our understanding of how teaching room resources on campus are actually being used in practice and will be used to inform future discussions in STG.

We have not carried out a survey in this format for a number of years and some staff will never have experienced what it entails in practice for classes. We are again employing agency staff, (many of whom have carried out previous surveys of this type when we did them annually,) and they have instructions to not disturb the class. They will enter the room if they need to, (if they can count from outside through a vision panel or window they will,) identify themselves, (only because we were asked to do that in previous surveys,) count the number of students in the room and leave as quickly as possible. Each surveyor has between 25 and 35 rooms to visit each hour so they need to get round the rooms and count the occupants efficiently.

Where we have suggested that there may be some specific activities that might be best not disturbed this hasn’t been included as generic opt out option for colleagues but for specific classes where disruption actually is an issue e.g. life drawing classes that used to take place in CLL

We appreciate there may be some push back from some colleagues who don’t appreciate the interruption – however can I please ask for your support as required to reinforce the need for this work to be carried out. If we do receive any direct messages from colleagues with concerns or with a cease and desist request, (sounds dramatic but it has happened before!) I will respond to them and cc the relevant VDA.

If you have any questions or comments or need any further information from me in this regard please let me know.

The published notice was as follows:

2022/23 TEACHING ROOM UTILISATION SURVEY

During week commencing 24th October 2022 all departmental and central pool teaching rooms, (including teaching workshops, laboratories and computing facilities,) will be surveyed as part of the annual teaching room utilisation survey.

Each room will be visited once during every hour of each day from Monday 24th October to Friday 28th October between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to count the number of students in each room.

In previous years the preference of some lecturers has been for the surveyors to identify themselves where it is necessary to enter the room to count the students.

This will continue to be the default instruction to the surveyors this year unless there is a weight of response to the contrary.

If you have any queries about the conduct of the survey or if there are any specific activities in department rooms which you would rather were not disturbed by the survey please contact David Knox at david.knox at strath.ac.uk<mailto:d.pollard at strath.ac.uk>.

Kind regards

David Pollard
