Subject: IMPORTANT: SEA deadline Friday 17th March 2023
Importance: High

Dear PGR Team,

As you may recall, the outgoing VDR set a common Faculty deadline for receipt of REA and SEA applications (Tuesday 13 December 2022) indicating that REA applications would not be accepted after that date but that SEA applications could be submitted up until around the beginning of March 2023.

We're now at that date. I'm therefore writing to confirm that ALL SEA applications must be submitted to Faculty by Friday 17th March 2023. Otherwise we can't guarantee they'll make the university cut-off.

The SRSS Guidelines are attached, and I've copied the part about the SEA below for convenience.

Student Excellence Award (SEA)

Criteria

* Funding is provided for excellent named students with at least a 2:I undergraduate degree (or equivalent). Faculties may set a 1st Class honours degree requirement.

* Faculties are responsible for managing funds across Departments/Schools, as well as setting deadlines for Faculty review prior to final submission of applications.

* A maximum of £12k per annum for 3 years (University) or £13k per annum for 3.5 years (EPSRC DTP) can be requested.

* The remaining funding to ensure full studentship packages must be contributed from alternative sources, such as External contributions, and Faculty, Departmental/School, or Supervisors' budgets.

* Applications must include: (i) an up-to-date CV; (ii) 2 appropriate and relevant references (signed, on headed paper and dated (within the last 6 months)); and (iii) transcripts for all qualifications whether awarded or ongoing (including an overall degree classification and officially translated, if necessary).

* Both EPSRC DTP and University funding is available for SEA studentships.

To minimise applications having to go back and forward between Department and Faculty for revision (as many of the REAs did) please can you:

· Ensure applications are complete and that the file attachments are as specified above (I can see that several departments have incomplete applications on the system)

· Ensure that the Project Summary:

     * Is written in an accessible fashion - or at least contains some introductory context or rationale for the study written in a manner comprehensible to a non-expert scientist
     * Explains what the student will actually do. Huge amounts of details are not required (though workpackages/milestones/deliverable can be included if the applicant wishes) but it should at least be clear e.g. whether it's a practical project or computational.
     * Is of an appropriate length. The limit is 1500 words but there is no need to fill that. For example, most of successful REAs had project summaries in the range 500-1000 words.

Please can you chase up any remaining applications, liaising with supervisors, HoD and DoR as required.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards,

Christine
