[Academic] VAT and IMPORT on expenditure

Hi

For information, please note that if you provide Customs Clearance (any courier) with a valuation on an order, they calculate the VAT and IMPORT duty on the valuation and not on the actual purchase price of the items.

If the valuation turns out to be much higher than the cost of the goods the VAT and IMPORT duty cannot be returned retrospectively. It is effectively lost.

I recently queried this with Finance as the cost of the goods were almost the same price as the VAT and IMPORT and unfortunately we cannot reclaim the costs.

May be unavoidable in some cases but where possible provide accurate information to Customs Clearance.

Thanks

Kirsten
