Good afternoon,
My name is Bence, I'm a resident doctor working in the paediatric surgical department of the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. Myself and a colleague Ms Brennan (Trauma and Orthopaedic Registrar) are planning an audit of occupational sound exposure in the plaster rooms at the RHC. I was hoping to inquire if your university department may have sound level calibration equipment, which I could possibly visit to calibrate an IOS app against?
Brief description of our planned audit:
Previous studies have demonstrated increased incidence of noise induced hearing loss in orthopaedic staff. Studies have previously focused on theatre environments; however orthopaedic cast saws (used in the plaster room) have previously been found to emit 95-100Db to the operator's ear. Regulations surrounding occupational sound exposure can be found from the HSE<https://www.hse.gov.uk/noise/regulations.htm?>, and we very much suspect that the sound exposure in the plaster rooms is in excess of this guidance. We hope this audit may inform change in our practice, and investigate the need for protective equipment for our colleagues.
How we need your help:
We plan to measure the noise exposure in the plater room for one week using the NIOSH sound level app developed and approved by the CDC. However, we recognise that a major limitation of our project is the calibration of the app against a reliable standard. Hence, I'm reaching out to ask if your university department may have sound level calibration equipment, which I could possibly use to calibrate our iphone/app against? My basic understanding of these devices is that they emit a tone of highly accurate frequency and amplitude (Typically 94Db), which I would tune our app to match.
Please let me know if this something your department may have, and if you would be happy for myself to briefly visit and calibrate our app? Otherwise if you may have any recommendation on where/ how we could calibrate for this audit, that would be equally appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Kindest regards,
Bence
