Hi All,

If you are not a PhD student who teaches, or has taught, (takes tutorials etc.) please disregard this message.

The University of Strathclyde and College Union are currently reviewing the payment that postgraduate tutors receive from the university.

Referring to section 5.9 in the policy and code of practice for PGR study, “all PhD students undertaking teaching assistant activities will be paid at an hourly rate agreed by the Department/School in line with normal University pay and grading arrangements”. Accordingly, this would be a great opportunity for all PGRs who teach to express any issues related to the time spent on preparation and marking as well as any late payments for their teaching hours.

Last year the Physics Department did not pay postgraduate tutors and payment has yet to be confirmed for the present year. Further to this there is currently great variation between university departments with regards to the pay structure, some tutors are paid close to £40 per hour for tutorials while others receive ≈£18, ≈£12 or are not paid at all. There is also variation on payment for preparation time and marking, again with some tutors being paid for these additional hours of work while others are not.

I raised these issues at a recent focus group and a recent meeting of the Doctoral Researchers Group of the newly formed Strathclyde Doctoral School, and while there is a strong will for change, data is required to inform campaigns which look at pay and time spent on marking.

As your PGR rep. I therefore ask for you to fill in the survey linked below such that you can have your voice and experiences heard.
